Biography:
I am a Professor of Astrophysics. I got a PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Bologna (Italy), after which I have been post-doctoral fellow at the Ludwig-Maximillian University of Munich (Germany) and the Max-Planck Institute for extra-terrestrial physics (MPE) in Garching (Germany). In 2005 I was awarded a Marie-Curie fellowship which I spent at the University of Oxford (UK). In 2007 I was awarded a Marie-Curie Excellence Team Grant with which I joined the University of Portsmouth (UK), as senior lecturer in 2007 and Reader since 2009.
My expertise is the modelling of the spectro-photometric and mass properties of galaxies. These so-called Stellar Population Models find ubiquitous applications in astrophysics and cosmology. In particular, they are the tool to study galaxy formation and evolution both theoretically and by interpreting data. The models I calculate are publicly available at: www.maraston.eu.
Qualifications: PhD in Astrophysics, University of Bologna, 1998.Achievements and recognition: Architect of the SDSS-III/BOSS project.
Premio San Marco 2011 for distinguished citizens in the Friuli region of Italy.
Grants: Marie Curie Excellence Team Grant "UniMass" (2007-2011) Principal Investigator, £1.4M.
RDF Grant, UoP, 2013-2014, £11k.
STFC Consolidated Grant "Cosmology and Astrophysics at Portsmouth" (2013-16) £1.7M, Co-investiagator.
STFC Rolling Grant “Survey Cosmology and Astrophysics” (2011-2013) £982k, Co-investigator.
Roles and Collaborations: Chair of the Working Group "Galaxy Evolution" for the SDSS-III/BOSS international project.
Executive Committee member of the SDSS-IV international project.
Work Package Leader of "Photometric redshifts and physical parameters" for the Operative Unit "Photometric redshifts" of the ESA mission EUCLID.
Core member of SERVS, a mission of the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope.
Member of the RESOLVE international collaboration.
At the University of Portsmouth: Member of the Faculty Research and Innovation Committee for the Faculty of Technology.
At the Institute of Cosmology: manager of the visitor budget with Kazuya Koyama; Seminar Organiser with Kazuya Koyama.
Postgraduate students supervised: Janine Pforr (2007-2012); Gustav Stromback (2077-2012); David Wilkinson (2011-2015); Claire Lecras (2012-2016); Pierandrea Guarnieri (2015-)
Teaching responsibilities: Mathematical Physics I (Physics, Level 4); Modern Astrophysics (Physics and Mathematics, Level 6). Graduate lecture series on Stellar Evolution and Galaxy Modelling. Personal tutor for Level 4 and 5.
