Cosmology is the physical science that study the Universe as whole. Cosmology as a physical science was born together with General Relativity, the theory that Einstein proposed about a century ago in order to incorporate in the description of gravity some fundamental ideas contained in Special Relativity, developed by Einstein himself in 1905, thereby generalising Newton’s gravity. Today General Relativity is well supported by many experiments, and many astronomical observations support what has become the “standard model” of cosmology. In this talk I will give an overview of today’s cosmology, starting from the expansion of galaxies and going back to the earliest times we can study with the physics we currently have.
