A new UKRI open access policy applies to peer-reviewed research articles submitted for publication on or after 1 April 2022. This affects STFC funded projects including STFC studentships.

UKRI open access policy

Follow the four steps below to fulfil the requirements.

1. The accepted version needs to be uploaded to Pure within 3 months of acceptance for any papers published by UoP researchers.

See the instruction here

2. You must include a data access statement in your article, even where there is not data associated with the article or the data are inaccessible.

On Pure, we normally use the following statement if you do not have any other plan to make your data available: “Supporting research data are available on reasonable request from the corresponding author xxx”.

See other examples here

3. Add the following text in the funding acknowledgement section of the manuscript and any cover letter/note accompanying the submission:

‘For the purpose of open access, the author(s) has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising’

4. Deposit the Author’s Accepted Manuscript (or published version, where the publisher permits) in Pure/arXiv with a CC BY licence (remember you need to upload the accepted version to Pure within three months of acceptance, see 1).

We recommend that we all follow the above steps irrespectively of journals submitted. Different options for journals can be found here.

Publications that need to acknowledge UKRI funding are required to comply with the policy even if you are not the corresponding author. To request an exception the grant holder should contact openaccess@funding.ukri.org. See UKRI FAQs.
