Researchers at the ICG are problem solvers, gaining an understanding of the science of the universe through the analysis of large datasets. The algorithms developed in cosmology research can be applied in other sectors to provide powerful insights from data. We are well versed in providing clear visual presentations from data with exciting visualisations.

Using our state-of-the-art supercomputer, SCIAMA, we are able to use advanced statistics and machine learning to identify correlations and anomalies in data sets.

Mini-case studies

Energy

The roll out of smart meters in the UK, targets the installation of such meters in each of the 26 million households in Britain. Working with an electricity supply company we have applied advanced cosmology algorithms to potentially monitor the health of smart meters.

Environment

Using the crowdsourcing citizen science techniques developed for our research, Landscape Watch, funded by InnovateUK, harnessed the enthusiasm of the general public to view aerial photographs and monitor changes in the Hampshire landscape.

Health

Working with world-leading clinicians, we plan to apply novel machine learning techniques, tested within astrophysics research, to predict patient outcomes and to guide treatment.

Partnership opportunities

We can offer a range of partnership opportunities including:

  • Industrial placements for our PhD students (see DISCnet)
  • Bespoke consultancy for your data intensive problem
  • Dedicated “data dives” or hackathons at the ICG
