As the DES Supernova Survey is expected to discover on order of 4,000 well observed Type Ia supernovae, the spectroscopic followup for this program faces unprecedented challenges. The questions of what type of information do we want to obtain, as well as how much information can we feasibly obtain are addressed in this talk, both from the supernova itself as well as from the host galaxy. An overview of the worldwide spectroscopic resources available was given, with a focus on understanding which observatories can be applied for by internal members, and which require coordination with external collaborators.
This talk was given in a Supernova Working Group parallel session of the Fall 2011 Dark Energy Survey Collaboration Meeting, Oct 8-11 2011
