Public Engagement Summer Internships 2017

In 2017, the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation are offering the following paid public engagement summer internships:

Project Title: Investigating the impact of the Portsmouth StargazingLIVE events at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Supervisors: Dr. Karen Masters and Dr. Jen Gupta
Date: 8 weeks by mutual agreement

Since 2013 the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation has run annual large-scale public Stargazing Live events in collaboration with the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. During this internship, the student will investigate the impact that these events have had on the attendees. Tasks will include analysing existing evaluation data from the five events, contacting previous attendees to determine any longer-term impacts of these events, and producing a report summarising their findings.

This project is funded by STFC through a Small Award.

Project Title: Tactile Universe Internship

Supervisors: Dr. Jen Gupta, Dr. Nic Bonne and Dr. Coleman Krawczyk
Dates: 8 weeks by mutual agreement

The Tactile Universe is a new public engagement project at the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, which is using 3D printed models of galaxies to engage the vision impaired community with our galaxies research. During this internship, the student will be a key member of the Tactile Universe team, working with their supervisors to help develop this project further. Specific tasks will be decided by mutual agreement with the student but could include helping with the development of school activities for vision impaired school pupils, managing the online presence for the project (social media and website), or assisting with the creation of new props to communicate different astrophysical concepts to a vision impaired audience.

This project is funded by The Ogden Trust. The successful applicant will subject to the Ogden Trust internship terms and conditions, and will be required to complete a timesheet, feedback form and short report.
