Sixth Form Outreach
The Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation works with key stage 5 physics students in the local region and beyond. If you have any questions about outreach for key stage 5 students then please contact the ICG Ogden Isaac Physics Fellow, Dr Nic Bonne (nicolas.bonne ‘at’ port.ac.uk).
Physics Taster Day
The University of Portsmouth offers a Physics Taster Day on campus for Year 12 students, that gives attendees a flavour of what it would be like to study physics at university. The content varies slightly from year to year, but usually includes talks about the cutting-edge research carried out at the ICG, participation in a ‘meet a physicist’ speed networking activity, and tours of the undergraduate physics teaching labs.
The Physics Taster Days are advertised to local colleges and booked through the university’s central Recruitment and Outreach Team. However, if you require any additional information about the events then please contact Dr Nic Bonne using the details given above.
The ICG hosts Dr Nic Bonne, an Isaac Physics Fellow who can visit your college to run a physics problem solving taster session for students and/or a CPD session for teachers, to get you up and running with the free online resources that Isaac Physics offer. Please send enquiries to Dr Nic Bonne using the details given above, or you can check out Isaac Physics for yourself at www.isaacphysics.org.
Members of the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation are available to visit your school or college to give a talk to Year 12 and/or 13 physics students. These talks can be tailored to support the physics course content, expose the students to physics beyond the specification, or encourage the students to consider studying physics at University. Recent talk topics have included “Big is Beautiful: Studying the Universe”, “Studying physics at University”, and “What can I do with a physics degree?”.
