Biography:
I am a Senior Public Engagement and Outreach Fellow in the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation at the University of Portsmouth, supported by the South East Physics Network (SEPnet) and The Ogden Trust. In this role I am in charge of the ICG’s strategic outreach and public engagement programme, where my responsibilities include running the schools outreach programme, supporting ICG members to do public engagement activities based on their research, and evaluating the impact of this work. I am the public engagement advisor for the Tactile Universe project to engage visually impaired people with astrophysics, and line manage Dr Nic Bonne who leads the project. I also manage a team of physics undergraduate outreach demonstrators who carry out schools outreach with me.
Outside of the ICG I work as a freelance science communicator and presenter. Most recently I presented the BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Stranger Than Sci-Fi’ with Alice Fraser which was broadcast in summer 2019.
My background is in astrophysics. I attended The University of Manchester and graduated with a MPhys in Physics with Astrophysics in 2008. I remained in Manchester to do a PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics with Professor Ian Browne and completed this in 2012, after which I moved to the ICG. My thesis title was “Mulitwavelength studies of active galactic nuclei in the Fermi era”.
